Setting up the womens’ tree planting groups at Kinda Biye and Ratanga has produced some unexpected benefits.
The success of their cooperative work regime has led them to cooperate on other projects. They have each set up a ‘table top bank’.
Every month they take any unspent income from their work at the tree nursery and put it into a shared ‘pot’. They then discuss their individual needs and decide who may borrow money, which is re-paid at a reasonable interest rate – all of which is added to the pot for future loans, so no money is paid to loan sharks at extortionate rates.
The ladies often borrow money to pay for medical bills, clothes, replacing pots and pans or to pay school fees.
