Maize suffers from a weed called Striga that is not fully understood by farmers. Despite its pretty purple flowers, Striga is a real problem. It is parasitic with roots that grow into the roots of the maize, absorbing its sap and reducing growth. In serious cases farmers get no harvest at all.
During our visit in July we helped to remove the Striga plants from the fields of a neighbouring farmer. We hope she will get an increased yield, understand the benefit of Striga removal and share this with other farmers.
